So this morning, I'm sipping my tea, and R notices an unusual squirrel on one of the trees in our yard. It had half a tail. He called it "Stubby the Squirrel" and he's probably been one of the culprits raiding our tomatoes and eggplants.

Today was "take the cats to the vet" day - and R assured me my presence would be unnecessary. So I went to work. Apparently, quite the time was had getting animals into carriers (Nika, the older cat cleverly figured out what was up and hid herself really well). Panzi was corralled and taken to the vet for spaying. Nika was left home (for the moment).

R came back for her later, found her and managed to get her into the carrier, and brought her to the vet. She has a dislocated tail bone (second or third one in) and the vet recommended amputation of the tip of the tail.

The squirrel sighting this morning suddenly takes on much more significance.

R is not taking this very well, however. I wish I was there for moral support. I think Nika will be OK - probably better once she heals, since she won't be in pain anymore.

I have known a cat like this - stubby, namely.
He got his tail run over by a car, more than half had to be amputated. He was a half-tame guy, staying on around our house after his original owner had moved out, and we were all worried.
But: He not only survived and acted the boss like before, he was actually able to balance on scaffolding with his stub! Amazing, but there you go.

A lot better than being in pain, for sure, even if she doesn't take it all that well...

*sends hugs and ear-scratches for who ever might need them*
