Quickie Movie Reviews: Shandy and Persepholis

I was very glad that I didn't have to pay for Tristram Shandy: A cock & Bull Story  (I got it on "rent one - get one free" days at Blockbuster). It was a big yawner. I suppose it is a British version of a Christopher Guest film - it really had the pacing of a Waiting for Guffman, but it wasn't nearly as funny. Maybe if I had read the book (if there was a book and that wasn't part of the story)... But I give that one a big "meh".

Much more entertaining/delighful/thoughtful/deep was Persepholis and not just because it was in French with English subtitles. The animation style was very excellent, the story was riveting, and one can pretend to get some insights into the fundamentalist regime that is the current Iran. I definitely recommend this film, even if you're "not into cartoons" - you kind of forget that it's a cartoon. It's just art.

Now back to having some DVDs in the backround (Third Rock from the Sun at the moment) and cutting fabric for the After Escher quilt. So many tiny triangles. (This lap quilt is composed of 36 blocks of 20 patches each. That's 720 pieces of fabric to sew together, not including the border. I think it's more pieces than the king sized drunkard's path. Yes I'm certifiable).

I haven't yet seen the film version but I've read both parts of Persepolis the book and enjoyed it as well. She is lucky her parents were so open minded and had means, otherwise her situation might have turned out quite differently.
