I don't think I have particularly sensitive olfactory senses, I'm not a "supertaster" and I can't identify all the components in a complex perfume, but I have noticed that family has a familiar and pleasant smell, and that non-family smell different. Probably from different soaps and laundry detergent, or maybe it's something more subtle.

One thing that I find somewhat disturbing is that for years my mother smelled "funny" to me; it was an unpleasant and very subtle odor that would lurk under her perfume. I chalked it up to "old lady smell" or something like that. And then she discovered she had stage IV ovarian cancer, which must have been with her for a long time. I have wondered ever since if I was smelling the cancer and just didn't know it. And I wish that I did understand what that change in odor meant and that I was able to send her to the doctor before it was too late.

I dreamed about her and dad last night/this morning. My memory of it all is pretty sketchy, but we were all at a wedding, and mom disappeared, and I was asking dad when he remembered seeing her last, and he was giving me sarcastic answers, the kind of answers he used to cover his senility. I remember crying and trying to get her on the phone and not being able to leave a message, and feeling lost and abandoned and stuck with dad. All pretty obvious stuff. It was hard waking up and remembering that they're both dead now..

3: One very cheap spanish liquid soap - no idea what they put in there, but it's incredibly nice-smelling.


Sorry to hear about your dream - very obvious, yes, but still very sad. Such is life...
