As some of you may remember, one of the various projects in this house that I have undertaken is reupholstering the living room couch. I  got all the back cushions done today and I started working on the seat cushions. I can't reuse the stuffing from the existing cushions because they are made from feathers and are flat with age. So I bought 3" foam at the fabric store a while ago and made a single cushion to test the instructions in a book I recently bought (the order of what to sew onto what is better than what I came up with before) and I put a foam cushion with 2 layers of upholstery batting in it, and put it on the couch - it was hard as a rock and will make the couch too hard and uncomforatble to sit on.

I then had the bright idea to put only batting in the cushion to see what would happen, and it became really puffy and even softer than the flat feather pillows. (so it's now too soft).

Sitting on the too soft cushion, I realize I made a couch cushion for Papa Bear, and then one for Mama Bear. I don't think I have the right mix of materials to make the Baby Bear ("just right") cushion without another trip out for thinner foam....

UFie (and former upholsterer) here...

If you have an electric carving knife, and silicone spray, you can cut the foam to the right thickness yourself.

Marking the cut line around the edge of the foam piece with magic marker is helpful, as is turning the foam so your cuts are vertical.

If you don't have an electric carving knife, look in thrift shops. I often see them there for $5 or under.

side note: cushions can also be stuffed with shredded foam if you want them to be soft and squishy.
