Ready for phase 2: Office Renovation
Jul. 29th, 2010 10:18 amThe old bedroom and the home office have been almost completely relocated into the new attic space (some of it for over a month, now). The rooms are empty, except for the few bookcases that we don't have space for anyplace else - we have collected them on the far side of the room, away from the construction, and covered them with tarps (well, plastic drop cloths, anyway). There are some things still on the shelves, because I just didn't have the energy to sort through them and decide what needs chucking out and what needs to be boxed.
I've packed up about 35 "small" boxes of books and papers and such, and could easily fill another 10 or so if I have to empty out a couple of bureaus that are filled with paper, cards and office supplies, and pack up the remaining shelf detritus. It's making me realize that I have to do a MAJOR decluttering of the entire house, and since I have to work a "day job" this project is going to take months and I'm feeling just a tad overwhelmed by it all. I suppose that in order to accomplish this task of Herculean proportions, I'm going to either have to redirect a river like said Hercules did to clean the whatchamacallit stables of legend* or break the job down into a very long list of smaller tasks.
In the meantime, I'm not quite in a holding pattern (the contractors won't be here until Monday, I found out this morning, as their "short" job turned into a "big job" when they pulled up floorboards and saw the Ant Colony of Doom nesting beneath), and I'm getting very anxious to clean *something* -- maybe I'll continue getting my walk-in closet together, now that all our clothes are up here, and there's no room for anything anymore. That will be hard - getting rid of the old clothes that don't fit but I still like. And deciding what to do with my collection of T-shirts - I have enough to not have to do shirt laundry for probably a year. I guess I'm going to be making T-shirt quilts from the shirts that I bought for souvenir purposes. At least that way, I can look at them sometime. I'm not really enamoured with T-shirt quilts, so I guess the challenge will be to put the t-shirt art in a setting that I can be happy with. Sigh. Every conversation I have these days devolves to quilt talk. I need to get back to the sewing machine, obviously.
*sidebar: My Firefox spellcheck doesn't like "decluttering" (or "spellcheck")., but is fine with "whatchamacallit". Hmmm...
Update: I went through all the plastic storage bins I packed up last April when we started on the attic - and I'm now wearing shorts! Yes, I located the rest of my summer wardrobe! Now everyone can see my dimpled thighs, and I can wear a camisole with built-in boob-support every day if I want, and do my laundry once a week! And my winter clothes are now in those same bins.

Date: 2010-07-29 08:32 pm (UTC)My wife and I started with 15 minutes a day, every day. Takes almost forever that way... but it was taking forever when we weren't even thinking of spending any time doing it the old way.
Not sure what I'll be doing with all my books. I've determined I need another complete room to get them all neatly on shelves.
