Weekend film watching
Jun. 3rd, 2007 07:32 pmAs I posted on Friday, I went out and rented 2 movies (instead of one, but at least I didn't rent four of them!). I got both the Queen and Eragon. My TiVo also recorded Bubba Ho-Tep which was broadcast yesterday on IFC (uncut/no commercials), which I also had not yet seen, and we watched last night.
I thoroughly enjoyed The Queen. I suppose Helen Mirren is one of those people that I'd pay to watch read the phone book. I'm going to have to pop Excalibur into the DVD player this week to see her hot and steamy Moragana Le Fay. I'm also amused that Mirren has now played both Elizabeths on screen (the HBO/BBC miniseries about Elizabeth I I thought was also really well done).
Eragon was uneven. It made me want two things: (1) to have read the book before I watched the movie (there was a lot of narrated backstory that I think would have been better set up if I just read the novel) and (2) wish that they had instead made a movie of Dragonriders of Pern. Eragon seems to be a mashup between Star Wars (Episode 4, or the first one) and Pern. I kept waiting for the revelation that the princess Eragon rescued was his sister and that John Malkovich was his father. Or something.
I kept wanting to see the dragon eat. Especially if it grew to full size in a matter of hours. I suppose it would be boring in a movie to have to wait a few years for something to grow. But it would have made a more interesting and realistic story.
Bubba Ho-Tep was actually kind of depressing. Maybe because I have a 92-year-old father in an assisted living residence, I didn't think the old age home and the old people were really funny. Although Ossie Davis as Jack Kennedy was pretty funny. That's about the level of gore I can deal with in a horror film, too (in other words, really cheezy, unrealistic effects). If it's too scary, I won't enjoy it.
The comic books I got this weekend were also pretty good. I'm currently followning Fantasic Four (and the Silver Surfer has just appeared, in time for the movie release), and Silver Surfer: Requiem which is a mini, written by J. Michael Straczynski (the man responsible for me reading graphic novels in the first place).
