Out of Attorney Review
Aug. 1st, 2007 09:46 amWe have a contract! Not for nearly as much money as I had hoped, but we'll clear our debt and pay off the relatives who've loaned us money.
Unfortunately, we don't have any of the renovation money we were counting on, which really sucks. All I can hope for is that work remains as lucrative as it has been since January and that we can save up money to start doing work around here. Hopefully, once we're down to one mortgage, we can put away cash faster. We also have to save for college for the kid and our retirement. It may be awhile before we move up to the attic.
At a minimum, we're going to get the ramp in on the deck and redo the railings to make it safe for both my father and my grandchild. We've been in here for 9 months now, and my dad still hasn't seen the inside of the house. I also want to replace the attic windows with double-pane and get insulation in there (under the theory that the money we save in heating fuel next winter will pay for the insulation - there is NOTHING up there right now). I think we'll have the money to do that work, and maybe get started on the downstairs bathroom. Maybe not. I still haven't received an estimate on what the bathroom will cost. Or maybe we'll replace the basement door, since it's drafty, has broken glass in it and is generally disgusting.
I just want to close on the house and be rid of it. The next hurdle is the inspection, which I think is happening on Sunday. Or maybe that's the appraisal. Or that could be going on today or tomorrow.
I keep wondering if we'll move up to the attic before the third floor bathroom is done, and I wonder if I'll be willing to have to go downstairs to use the bathroom. I remember doing that one other time, but we were younger then, and we didn't need to go pee in the middle of the night sometimes. Well, there's a lot of work to be done up there before it's habitable in any case.

Date: 2007-08-01 02:16 pm (UTC)I'm sure insulation will pay off nicely. And has to be done anyway. I would personally put that first. That, and the ramp.
That house is spectacular enough as it is, in any case ;-).

Hope the sale of the old house keeps wending its way to completion. And yeah, insulation would be my first choice on projects. I've got trees that want to brush up against the house when windy to trim before it gets cold.
