We made it through the Pagan Picnic this weekend, and that huge box is now checked off on my "to do" list. Whew. I had 5 people attend my tarot class, and as usual, learned more from my students than I feel I taught them. I'll probably post the info on my witchy site, mamawitch.com in a few days or so, when I update that site. The kid also came home from her week at the beach with her friend's family, and it was nice to be with her again. She does love her room all redecorated, and is whiny about all the reorganization she's forced to do, but she's already redone her clothing (and made an enormous pile of clothes that don't fit and such).

Rich met the buyers at the house yesterday morning - they had just finished their inspection. I suppose we'll hear from our lawyer in the next day or so if there are any issues they want us to address. I'm hoping that there aren't any, because I'm extremely resistant to spending one more dime on that house, considering the reduced price and all. I just got my homeowner's insurance bill for the coming year, and it's not due till the end of September, so I don't have to renew that (I do have to pay this quarter's property tax this week, which I should be reimbursed for most of it at the closing). I'm really hoping we can close this month.

The ferret will be going in for his adrenal gland tumor surgery next Monday, and this past weekend, the cat has had the runs and has been throwing up for 3 days straight. I will be calling the cat vet in a few minutes and hopefully Nika will be seen today, and that the vet can figure out what the hell is wrong with her. I'm hoping it's something minor, like she ate some packing foam from the furniture, and that it's not something serious. She's at most, 11, but I think she's closer to 10 years old... Lessee... we got her around the kid's 4th birthday, and she was 9 months old. The kid is now 13 and a half... so let's say the cat is 10. Which is old but not elderly for a cat, right?

It's just occurred to me that my ferret and cat are about the same "age" in terms of their life cycles, and I'm wondering if my dad is also in the same age zone as the pets are, and having medical issues with family and critters at the same time is a bit overwhelming. At least the humans have insurance. The animals, not so much, and their testing and treatment isn't really that much cheaper than for humans. The first vet we took Trelane to cost 450 for the diagnostic visit, bloodwork, and a lupron shot (the stopgap treatment for adrenal disease). They were asking for 1200 dollars for the surgery, which we just can't afford. This other vet is asking about 800 and his office visit charge is half what the fancy vet hospital charges. Considering that none of the other ferrets lived longer than 8 years, I am not sure how "cost effective" this surgery is (since Trelane is 5), but his quality of life will be much better for his final years than if we let the tumors run their course.

the other 2 films we watched were Children of Men and Casino Royale (the remake, not the one with Woody Allen and David Niven).

We saw Casino Royale first. It was better than the Roger Moore and subsequent Bond flicks, but I had a lot of trouble suspending my disbelief during the chase scenes at the beginning. I was disappointed that Bond now plays Texas Hold'em poker instead of Baccarat, but I'm sure that change was made due to the current popularity of that game with US audiences. It was OK - although I did request that Rich fast forward through the "bad guy tortures Bond" scene - it probably wasn't as bad as I was expecting (but I didn't want to watch someone get beaten with a heavy blunt instrument) - because the film was rated PG-13 rather than R, but I remembered how unpleasant the last couple of Mel Gibson cop movies were, and I didn't want to subject myself to that right before bedtime.

Children of Men was a much better film, even though it was more difficult to watch. Dystopian films generally are more difficult to watch. The acting was very good. I particularly liked how everyone reacted to the baby. I think it ended a bit too soon - I wanted to see what life on the boat was like and if they went someplace that was better than the UK had become.

I am quite looking forward to Stardust, opening this weekend. I loved the book when I read it.

Awwww - poor pets.

It's really amazing what pet surgery costs, here, too! And just as with humans, it's always difficult to choose what makes sense and what will just prolong a suffering... I'm sure you're doing the right thing.
Nika definitely didn't "feel" all that old. I really hope she'll recover!

One last time: Good luck on the house closure!
