Back to the salt mines
Sep. 4th, 2007 01:02 pmI'm back to the grind again after a week of unpaid work around the house. I probably got 25% of the things I wanted to get accomplished done.
I have to come up with magic and rituals for the coven retreat this coming weekend (this weekend didn't seem so bad when we scheduled it last November, but Geebus!, it's incredibly inconvenient right now!), and I have to work with the coven sister that's been having issues with the rest of the coven (and who thinks she "owns" the coven, too). I guess it's OK, because she called last week and pretty much took charge of the whole thing, and at this point, I don't much care - it's less work for me.
What's bothering me more is getting my set together for the festival in 3 weeks' time - I'm the 'dinner show' and I think I have some serious sequencing to do to be able to pull off a one-woman show - and it's time consuming and I am not really set up anymore to do it efficiently.
I have an "overtime" gig to do this month, as well (for money, so it can't be ignored) - this is actually interesting, as I'm creating a corporate Wiki for both internal and external users. I'll get to learn some new and marketable skills, and this is a pilot project that, if it goes successfully, will lead to more work. Which is also good, as the fulltime project I'm on now is scheduled to end in November and I don't know if the contract house is going to find me another project when this one is done. The problem is going to be finding the time to do all of this.
In more domestic matters, I have window treatments to make for the bedroom, and we've been discussing me recovering the couch in the living room (not for the faint of heart - there are 8 cushions, all with piping, and the base of the sofa is in 2 pieces). And I have window treatments to make for the downstairs as well - we are coming up on 9 months in this house, and it's time to finish up the decorating and unpacknig. I also want to have some quilts to show/sell at Philcon (the week before Thanksgiving) and I have a Xmas quilt to get busy on for my mother-in-law.
I did finish the baby quilt for my preggo coven sister - never did get the invite to her shower (on Sunday this week), but as A didn't get her invitation to her friend's Bat Mitzvah either, I'm thinking the postal service is screwing with our mail (or stuff isn't getting forwarded properly anymore?) I'll be posting pix on the quilting blog I have over at Vox at some point. And I finished the window treatments for A's room - it's all done except for the desk that back ordered. Which sucks, because she won't have a proper desk when school starts tomorrow, but what can you do?
I started reorganizing the basement and there is so much crap that we don't really need, but it's still got life in it, so I'd rather not just toss it out. However, the ROI on yardsales is negligible (in terms of time spent), and freecycle is a bit of a PITA. I may just do a "curb alert" announcement there and let people come and take things before the trash guys pick it up.
And I'd love to get rid of all the baby toys, but now that we've got a grandkid, we should have something in the house for her to play with besides hand-thrown pottery and mom's crystal, and the oil paints. So I have to keep hold of the bazillion Duplo pieces and the other stuff - I think I'll get rid of the handmedown lincoln logs, and just keep the tinkertoys and the duplo and the wood blocks and the train stuff. I think I'll give all the other stuff away.
I think I'll also give myself till Spring to convert the broken Digeridoos into hinged cylindrical boxes (for things like wood flutes or incense), and then they are in the trash, too.
Still no word on the house from the buyer, if our concession is enough for him to complete the purchase. I'm hoping we can still close a week from Friday.
I had to physically go to the health department this morning to arrange a reinspection for the Certificate of Occupancy for the house. They refused to pick up the phone from 9AM to 10AM and their answering machine was shut off, too. It went from ringing to "busy circuit". Having to deal with the municipal government in any capacity is simply a pain in the butt. The ONLY good thing about it was I got out of the house and I decided to walk there rather than take the car. Took about 1/2 hour all told.
