I absolutely love the "woman's calf" version. Do you really need colours? Me, personally, I think the butterfly is a tiny bit to "naive" for you, considering age and background and all - but please believe me: NO offense meant at all !
there are a number of "layers" in the meaning of that butterfly drawing, and the blue curlicues are intended to be a lot more dramatic (I actualy want tiny, mirrored homages to Hokusai's "Great Wave" painting (here if URLS are working (http://mexplaza.udg.mx/wm/paint/auth/hokusai/great-wave.jpg)).
It's to commemorate a "close encounter" I had with that particular species of butterfly a few years back (it's a zebra swallowtail), and as an acknowledgement of changes that have occurred within during the same time period (butterflies are representative of inner changes in my spiritual path). Also the copious amounts of water flowing from between the woman's legs is evocative of sexual energy (something that I don't want to lose as I age) as well as fertility (in the artistic/creative sense and not in the breeding sense).
It also has the added irony of being "ooh, a butterfly!" cute (especially when it's shrunk down to size, I expect the woman's silhouette to be quite subtle), and therefore a "typical" woman's tattoo.
But, hey, at least I'm not planning on a fairy or a unicorn ;-P
Ok - thanks! It all certainly makes sense! That wave is impressive, as well... I can see now. It only takes some explaining, sometimes :-). And I have nothing against fairies, by the way ;-)! But I *do* have something against colour in tattoos. That's just me, of course :-D.
I used to be of a similar mind, until I saw some truly impressive body art on a couple of people a few years ago. IMO, it's important to keep a colored tatoo out of the sun so it doesn't fade too badly over time. I also like all-black "tribal" art tatoos, and I usually sport one on my leg at festivals (because that's one spot on me where I can paint my own body). They look the most "real" of the temps. And they last the longest, too.
if you look really closely at the drawing between the woman's legs (the bottom of the tail section on the butterfly's wings), the drawing has a "hidden" labia/clitoris (and yes, that was done on purpose, too). It's not exactly an "innocent" tattoo at all.
Hey - all good ;-D! I do *get* it in the meantime! Maybe you should carry flyers with explanation to go with it ;-D? Sorries. I'm in a bit of a silly mood, it seems. It really is a clever design, I must say. Not awfully self-explanatory at a glance, though - which is what these things get, usually... But I am starting to feel like an awful nitpick in the meantime. Please don't mind me. After all, *I* couldn't even draw a butterfly if my life depended on it!
Pretty!
