AP news article about the LHC
Sep. 10th, 2008 08:45 amIt's not a bad article. The thing that struck me is that the article had to explain what a proton is. I knew what a proton was in 4th grade, well before I had the (short-lived) desire to become a physicist.
And why didn't I become a physicist, you wonder? It's because I discovered, during my undergraduate years that physics was more competitive than pre-med (which I thought was the most competitive thing there was at the time), and that physicists were always jockeying for grants and trying to be the first to discover something.
Later on, I discovered that many people with advanced degrees in physics wound up working on Wall Street, using their math superpowers to figure out how to squeeze even more money out of the stock market, and I was glad to have avoided that whole thing.
